Join the School of Languages and Linguistics at the Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne for a sneak preview of this thought-provoking and moving documentary film.
"Pepe el Andaluz" tells a personal story that becomes a universal one by linking with core features of family relationships. This documentary also concerns tragic conflicts like war and its consequences: poverty, exile and repression.
An autobiographical film that displays a reflection on the mechanisms behind memory and how pain and blame affect our will of remembrance. "When I was a child, I was told my grandfather Pepe had died. Later I found out that after the Spanish Civil War he had immigrated to Argentina in search of better fortunes. My family never heard from him again. The absence of Pepe forced my grandmother to immigrate to Algeria. That was the start of a family diaspora which has us spread out around the world." Alejandro Alvarado, Director.
"Pepe el Andaluz" is a trip against time and oblivion to uncover family secrets and taboos. A story that only raises questions and hides unexpected discoveries: pieces of the fragmented image of my grandfather, José Jódar Sánchez, of whom we will never have a complete map.
The film will be introduced by Professor Alfredo Martínez-Expósito FAHA, Head of School & Professor of Hispanic Studies, School of Languages & Linguistics at the Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne. The Directors, Alejandro Alvarado and Concha Barquero, will be in attendance at the event and discussion space will be provided after the screening.
